Series of Fortunate Events

This week was supposed to be a very busy week with Labs, Presentation, group meetings, birthday gift brainstorming, birthdays, and being a good host to my Canadian cousins.

Labs and presentation are presently the only work I do in school. Lectures mean nothing to me as I barely absorb anything, and mostly kinda tune off in class. There are days where I am paying super hard attention which are almost rare, and a little scary when I get all focused, and scribble all over my page. Tutorials are like lectures to me, they are when I metaphorically shake my leg and copy. Imma free rider. Unfortunate thing to proclaim.

However, like always, I have chosen to take the easy way out. And done like a little for everything, just enough to get by, just enough to get some marks and not even fully understand anything. It is a sucky feeling, but working hard, is just too hard a feat for me currently. Remorseful thought I know.

So on wednesday night, I was deciding on what formal outfit I should wear to my presentation. I looked at my wardrobe, everything strewn in a corner, pulling a shirt from under would cause the whole pile to tumble. Sigh. Nothing to wear. I have honestly no dress shirt, no dress pants, and no dress shoes. I have to make do with what I have. So I pulled out a black jeans from under, saw a checked colllared shirt hanging up there, and just took it. Now shoes. Grrr… where can I get shoes? So I begged my sister to look for a big size shoe for me… So in the end, I bought her damned shoes. I honestly HATE dressing so formally. I hate having to behave like what I wear. Anyhow, this is my second year in school and honestly my first formal presentation.

Now some say I look like I am in Pajamas which was rather insulting, but I guess it’s true. The shirt doesnt even look ironed, and my pants are obviously jeans. But from a distance, it does look kinda formal, that will do I guess, more formal than usual at least. Another said I looked different, I teased “prettier eh?”, he said “no, fatter”… haha… and walking down the stairs, I saw Sarah, she said I looked old fashioned. I guess that means Old Granny outfit. LOL. On the brightside, I looked more “hip”, and I decided to let that be my compliment of the day. Some girl of whom I thought was the sexiest looking person in my class said she liked my shirt, so that made my day. While others tried to be nice, “It doesnt matter how you dress, It is what u present that matters”… Ok fine. Good.

So, you know I hate heels, I dont wear heels, so throughout the day, I was wearing my rather rugged looking black shoes, with SOCKS. It doesnt even go with my outfit. I guess my dressing was a disaster. Ok, so nearing my presentation time, I changed my shoes to the heels. Just 3 hours in those heels and Im already crying inside! Painful despicable ugly pointy high shoes. Bruised my toe knuckles.

Well, presentation was a rocket success, professor loved it I suppose.

Ok, so my Canadian cousins are in town, so thursday night was the night my family was suppose to bring them to Night Safari! We wanted to see the animals… Soooo looking forward to that night!! I was excited, I think pretty much everyone was. My cousins even knew that there’s gonna be some animal show at 7pm. That means they did their research on Night Safari! We were all in high anticipation. Unfortunately, the weather wasnt very nice. So change of plans.

We went to Marina and wanted to enter Waraku, but it was so full, so in the end we ate Jap food at Ministry of Food. It was okay. The ramen honestly tasted like packet noodles. Bleh. Anyhow, we wanted to catch a movie, but nothing good was showing. And they were almost deciding on the Spiderwick Chronicles and I was so against it, just coz I had two tickets wasted on it and no one wanted to go then. And now they are gonna spend money on that movie??? I am a miser. I was a strong NO.

So then, we went back to Fairmont, and like got a glimpse of Singapore’s hotels. Impressive I must say.

We then proceeded to the Equinox. 70th floor with nice scenery and good ambience. The elevator was impressively fast. It took like about say 5 seconds? While the elevator in my school that goes to at most 5 floors takes like 5 minutes? The atmosphere at Equinox was sexy. Really, all the girls look hot and all the guys look suave. So then I was impressed with these laser lights “sprinkling” green dots on people’s shirts. So I stood there trying to catch the “rain droplet”-looking light beams, and incidentally, I caught the whole beam in my eye, and I was momentarily blind. My eyes hurt! Took me a while to regain myself. Never ever do that again.

Ink Club BarThen we decided to hang out at Ink Club Bar. The almonds were good, I guess I kept eating. I love life music! ALOT. We tried to sabotage our cousins to go up there to dance. And told the waiter to dedicate our song to the engaged couple. But they were rather “un-sporting”, but everything else was fun. We all joked around. Good times, I had fun actually, I hope everyone else does too.

Oriental CostumesSo friday came, had to travel from far WEST all the way to Qian Xi Lou… Pamela’s oriental birthday party was right after my last class, so I had to look for something that wasnt too overly dressed for school, and wasnt too under dressed for her birthday. So I had this Indian shirt (this shirt is probably charmed and probably the article of clothing that brought some Indian guys in my life). It was pretty cool I guess. Too bad no one else was oriental, except for Linda, for we found a Baju Kurong at the last hour. She looked cute in it! Pamela’s mom was rather oriental actually.

Oriental DinnerImpressive Dinner! Thank you Pamela! We had expensive food like Shark’s fin, Sea cucumber, Abalone, etc etc. I really love the birthday buns and the butter prawns and the fish. As much as I dont like durians, HER durian cake was yummy. Karaoke was rather fun. Pamela has such entertaining family who are all talented in singing. And saw some old friends I never thought I’d see again, like Emily and Camy. Pamela has nice friends like Sheena, and food-compatible buddy like Eric. And all TG members were present. Except Mayling. Well all’s good. I really hope Pamela had fun!! Karaoke is soo fun… I like yelling crazily to OLD songs… Too bad. SOME person was sooo unSporting, and refused to sing even under pressure. LOL. Too cool to sing huh? LOL.

Birthday Crowd

Anyhow, Saturday, time to send my cousins off. Had good dinner. Highlight food is Sambal Crayfish. Scrumptious! Im gonna miss my cousins. The whole ten days they were around, my family has just been having good-food karma. Apart from me eating McDonalds for 3 whole days for lunch in school, dinner has been lavishingly good. And lunch on weekends have been great too (e.g. DimSum at Paramount Restaurant)! That explain my 2.5kg increase in weight, which hopefully will go down soon. McDonald’s soo good when you are hungry and on the rush, they pack things in a good to-go way.

Sigh, what a tiring but memorable week.

Apologies in regards to this whiny, naggy, lengthy entry.

Food that Appeared Like Magic

Filed under: Food, Society — sucrebleu @ 1:20 am

Almost like an answer to my hungry stomach, I walked towards the final lecture room of the day, to find, a spread of pastry buffet-styled. The “aroma” greeted me almost half a mile away. It was like beckoning me over to the food. So needless to say, being the inconsiderate little brat that I am and having no manners, I picked a tiny quiche looking thing and popped it in my mouth. Delightful.

“Stealing” food is fun. Even more so, than free food being offered right to your doorstep. Somehow before that, everyone walked in the lecture room, trying to be oblivious to the sweet smell of food. However as more people, tried to sneak into their mouths a few light bites, more people became bolder and followed.

Now people who weren’t early birds, saw a crowd sneaking in food, and perhaps assumed the spread was meant for us. Therefore, they were all unassumingly bold, and ate carefreely, instead of the initial few people who had to be discreet.

Now, I am thinking, why was there food there in the first place? Was it even meant for us? Were they leftovers from some  functions, and left there for anyone who could help finish up the food? Or were they set up for later, and people just ate with no care in the world? What if those people who ordered the spread came back and led their guests to the food, only to find out they were all gone?? That would be outrageously unfortunate and funny actually.

Now here’s another thing that amused me. I sat observing people while concurrently tried to pay attention to the lecturer. Everyone who snuck some food in their mouths one way or another, walked in with 3 kinds of smile:

1) the gleeful “ooh I’ve been naughty stealing food” grin

2) the sheepish “ooh I snuck in a small bite” guilty smile

3) the bold “burps I had a blast eating” smile

Hilarious observation.

And we are all willing to walk in late to class for that food outside.

Pro Dogs & Anti Cats

I saw a Rotweiller lying limp along the middle of the highway pretty close to some cheffron marking that separates the highway exits. It was around exit 30 along PIE towards Tuas.

Whimpers* Which idiot did that?

I walk back home, and a pretty fat white siamese looking cat was perched and cozied up in the thickness of the cow grass. You know how there’s this belief that cats have 9 lives? Yeah, I kinda wish it was the cat who ran across the road and got hit, instead of the dog.

Needless to say. I favour dogs over cats.
